Opportunity to Help: Slabs for Calgary

It’s been hard to fathom the amounts of rain and meltwater that have spread out over Western Canada the last little while.  Those of us in Saskatoon have watched the river swell, swallow sandbars, and run up over the road in places and we are so far downstream from the devastation….

Many of us have family in affected areas.  Calgary, Siksika First Nation, High RIver, Bragg Creek….  There are a number of communities affected and everyone could use a hug. And we sew those around here.

LET’S HELP!

Cheryl from Dining Room Empire is in Calgary.  She and a number of talented quilters are organizing to collect blocks, get them sewn together, and quilted, then giving them to those hit hardest.  The blocks Cheryl is asking for are called Slabs.  The directions are in her book Sunday Morning Quilts but she’s generously shared the basics for them on her blog in this post.

They’re easy and quick to make, and will chew up some of those scraps you’ve got lying around.  I’ve made a bunch already and we would love to have a giant stack to send on behalf of our guild.  If you have the time and energy, and would like to contribute, please bring your 15 1/2″ slabs to our Wednesday, July 10th meeting – 7pm at the Greystone CO-OP or contact us to arrange an alternate time to get them to us.

If you have completed quilts or tops that you’d like to donate, there are also places to do that as well.  More information here.  Financial donations should be made to the Canadian Red Cross.

Thanks and have a safe (and dry!) long weekend!

Carly

June 23rd 2013 Meeting

Yesterday we showed off the results of our ‘Make it Modern’ challenge, saw our first completed charity quilt and shared even more great finishes! We don’t have a lot of business over the summer months and we are taking a little breather from challenges.

Our next challenge is: ‘Inspired By…’. We are asking our members to make a quilt that is inspired by a movie, book, piece of art or music. We want the finished project to mean something to you and so we are giving lots of time to make something really great. The deadline is September 29th, and we’d love to hear the stories that go with the quilts at that meeting.

Here are the finishes from our most recent challenge to take a traditional block or idea and put a modern spin on it.
