The Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild was founded in December of 2012. We are the official Saskatoon branch of The Modern Quilt Guild and proud to represent the art of modern quilting in the area.

In December 2012 a small inaugural group, Co-Chaired by our founders, Jaclyn Bartlett and Carly Murray, met in in the back of Periwinkle Quilting and Beyond when it was located in Grosvenor Park Shopping Centre on 8th Street in Saskatoon. Michelle, the former proprietor, kindly let us use this space even after she moved her store to Broadway Avenue where the space was larger. We very quickly outgrew even that space and so held some meetings at the Field House before finding a new home in the Community Room at the Stonebridge Sobeys. We very quickly outgrew that space as well and moved to the Home Inn & Suites in Stonebridge.

Jaclyn and Carly aptly navigated and grew our guild from that first meeting through to the end of 2015. Patti was our initial treasurer. She kept our meager funds between her mattresses before we sprung for a real guild bank account and Sheila soon took over the treasury. Bev drew up our bylaws. Tarra stepped up to take on the responsibility of communications. And when we needed to plan a big event (our first quilt show in 2015), Nicole stepped into that very demanding role, followed by Kelly in 2016. Heather maintains the guild’s library.

A Little About Modern Quilting….

Modern Quilting is part technique, part aesthetic. Most, though not all, modern quilts are pieced and quilted by machine, with many artists doing their own quilting on their home machines. Experimenting with colour and placement, working without a pattern, asymmetry, and giving oneself freedom to ‘play’ are all encouraged in modern quilting. New trends in the modern movement appear frequently; ideas such as “low volume,” where all the fabrics are on the low end of the value spectrum, and cutting without rulers, have created some incredible works of art, most of which grace beds and sofas wanting to be used as much as admired.

“Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. “Modern traditionalism” or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.”

A child of the 20th Century, modern quilting has benefited from a large online presence. Many modern quilters are also bloggers and post about their quilts through social media and other web tools. The widespread sharing of ideas, inspiration, and techniques via the internet has led to virtual quilting bees, e-magazines, and online quilt-alongs. The new availability of designer fabrics and the wide range of colour solids through not only local but online shops has made the art of quilting more accessible than ever, inspiring many non-crafters to pick up the rotary cutters themselves and get sewing!
