September 2025 Meeting

The next meeting is September 28,2025.

We have an exciting September meeting planned, which includes both a Sew Day and Regular Meeting at Home Inn and Suites (253 Willis Crescent). Come and Go from 9 am to 5 pm (free for members) with a Lunch Break at 12 pm and Meeting from 2 to 4 pm.

It will be fun to restart after a nice summer. Our education topic will be a group share on scrap busting quilts. Please bring a few favourite quilts or patterns that can be made using scraps! And if you have time before then, please make and contribute 10.5” square crumb block(s). Roxanne has shared dreamline strip patterns over the summer so check your emails for patterns. Only one more to go after her email on September 8. If you would like to participate in door prizes, please bring a wrapped gift with a maximum value of $15. It should be something you would love to receive, like quilting items, plants, books, chocolates, etc.

Please RSVP for the sew day to Laura via the email sent to members. Members that are only able to attend the meeting should arrive by 2 p.m. Try to remember to bring your name tags! For those that are new, we encourage our members to wear their own stitched name tags.

May 2025 Meeting Review

We met at Home Inn and Suites on May 25, 2025 for a sew day. We had the pleasure of hosting a virtual trunk show with Chris Jurd of Patchwork Fun from Australia. What a treat to view four decades of her incredible quilting work! Chris is the author of Big, Bold & Beautiful, although the book is currently out of print. However, you can still explore her unique patterns on her Etsy shop: http://www.PatchworkFun.etsy.com. You can also follow her quilting journey on social media including Facebook: Chris Jurd and Instagram: @patchworkfun. Her email is: chris.jurd@bigpond.com.

One of the standout features of her quilts was the incorporation of vintage doilies, giving them new life as integral design elements. She also shared a helpful tip of using spacers when piecing borders to avoid the hassle of matching patterns. One of her bordered quilts served as a perfect lead-in to our educational segment on crumb quilts. We learned that when sewing curves, bigger really is better! We highly recommend Chris’s trunk show to anyone interested in her vibrant approach to fabric selection. Her quilts are bursting with colour and creativity. We’d love to welcome her to Canada one day and our fingers are crossed for a future in-person workshop!

Now, back to our crumb quilt project! Everyone is encouraged to create 10.5” (minimum) square crumb blocks for our September meeting. These blocks will be used in our next charity quilt. Be sure to trim all seams to 1/4 inch, to press all seams carefully, and to use a short stitch length to secure tiny pieces (thanks to Roxanne and Laura for the inspiration boards!). Make as many blocks as you’d like!

Our last charity quilt shown below (thank you to everyone who contributed!) will be donated to the auction by https://www.jzgolfclassic.org/.

The next “dreamline quilt” will feature a bead design. Watch your email over the summer as Roxanne will continue to send out patterns. From show & tell, if you have scrap batting that is at least 12” x 18”, please donate it to Laura for making kennel quilts. Andrea recommended the Stitch Obsessed YouTube video: Glue Basting 101 at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BrbztHwh-A&t=66s . She was so impressed, she bought a 4L bottle of glue!

Mark your calendars! Our annual quilt show will take place in Buena Vista Park on Sunday, August 24, from 2:00–4:00 PM. Please arrive around 1:00 PM to help set up.  Parking is ideal on Melrose Street. Bring your lawn chairs, ropes, ladders, clips/clothes pins. A tip is that long ratchet straps are excellent for displays and much better than sagging ropes!

The remaining dates in 2025 are reserved and the dates, including Tuesdays in the summer, and they are as follows: June 17 (Tues), July 15 (Tues), Aug. 12 (Tues), Aug. 24 (quilt show), Sept. 28, Oct. 26, Nov.16 (Nov 23 not available), and Dec.14. November will likely be a workshop. Stay tuned.
