Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild

We met at Home Inn and Suites, where Rosanne treated us to a wonderful presentation about her journey into modern quilting. She highlighted three different modern quilters:

1. Victoria Findlay Wolfe, who has proven that quilting is an art, not just a craft. Fun fact: she was the People’s Choice winner at QuiltCon in 2016. We were all in awe of her stunning double wedding ring quilts. Rosanne shared Wolfe’s book 15 Minutes of Play: Improvisational Quilts with us and hinted that a new book from her will be coming out soon.

2. Gwen Marston, renowned for her liberated quilts, often says, “Make the quilts you want, and make them the way you want to make them.” We explored a couple of her books, including Liberated String Quilts and Liberated Quiltmaking. We learned that the modern quilt movement was inspired by the imperfections of antique quilts.

3. Freddy Moran, famous for her bold declaration that “Red is a neutral,” started quilting at 60 years old. Her vibrant face quilts are truly beautiful. We were introduced to her books Collaborative Quilting and Freddy and Gwen Collaborate Again.

Lorna also presented her beautiful box top quilt. We are all challenged to make a quilted item using the colors from the box we selected in the spring—her quilt is truly stunning!

Looking ahead, don’t forget to mark your calendars for Terry Rowland’s Lecture and/or Workshop on October 18–19, 2024. If you’d like to contribute to a charity quilt, pre-cut your Fall-colored fabrics, and we’ll provide the background. If you’re making your own blocks, please pre-cut all the fabrics you’ll need.

Our next meeting will be on October 27. The education topic is circles and curves, and it will be a group share. Bring any blocks, quilts, table runners, bags, or other projects you’ve pieced with circles and curves to share and inspire us!

Lastly, keep working on your letter quilts and box top quilts. The grand reveal will be our November education topic. Think about why you chose your pattern and what story it tells—let’s share our quilting journeys together.

The next meeting is September 22nd.

We have an exciting September meeting planned, which includes both a Sew Day and Regular Meeting at Home Inn and Suites (253 Willis Crescent). Come and Go from 9 am to 8 pm (free for members) with a Lunch Break at 12 pm and Meeting from 2 to 4 pm.

Please RSVP for the sew day to Sherry via the email sent to members. Members that are only able to attend the meeting should arrive by 2 p.m. Try to remember to bring your name tags! For those that are new, we encourage our members to wear their own stitched name tags.

We hope you are working away on your Word and Box challenges. Those projects will both be revealed in November. If you did not provide your partner with their ugly fabric challenge, we hope you will be giving this to them in September. Also in November, we will have elections. Donna must step down from the Co-Chair position as per by-laws.

Our Fall meetings are planned as follows so put the dates in your calendars: Sept. 22, Oct. 27, Nov. 24, and Dec. 15.

Roxanne is planning a PowerPoint presentation on foundational modern quilter(s). If a trailblazer in modern quilting has inspired you, please plan to share who they are and what their quilting style is. Feel free to bring a book, project, or any related materials to show their influence.
