May 2021 Meeting Review

The Saskatoon MQG met on May 30th in Buena Vista park. It was so wonderful to see people in-person and the eye candy was delightful. See the collage below which is a mix of travelling quilt blocks and projects. Nancy did a fantastic educational talk on library resources. The take-away was that we are fortunate to have a great public library system in Saskatoon, and books on modern quilting are in their collection.

Here is a shout out to some of the books that were discussed in the meeting: Create your own Improv Quilts by Rayan Gillman, Quilt Improv – Incredible Quilts from Everyday Inspirations by Lucie Summers, Quilting Modern – Techniques and Projects for Improvisational Quilts by Jacquie Gering, Modern Quilt Perspectives – 12 Patterns for Meaningful Quilts by Thomas Knauer, Missouri Star Quilt. Co. Mod Block, and The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilter’s by Sherri Lynn Wood.

We also are encouraging using resources at TheModernQuiltGuild.com because we have access to these as part of our membership fees for the Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild. Recommended resources discussed included: Episode 109 Scraps and Pieces by Shannon Brinkley, Episode 301 Blocks by Ebony Love, Episode 305 Negative Space by Audrey Esarey, and Episode 213 Deconstructed blocks ty Sylvia Schaefer.

Remember to start planning for our “Negative Space Challenge” with the reveal in August. The only rule is that the finished project is 8.5″x11″. Our next meeting is on June 27th and our educational topic is embellishments. We ask that everyone bring in examples of projects with stitching. It doesn’t just need to be quilts.
