January 2026 Meeting Review

We met at Home Inn and Suites on January 25, 2026. Welcome to a new year with the Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild. A reminder that membership registration must be completed by January 31 to remain active. Laura opened the meeting with a fun icebreaker by asking the 24 members present how many sewing machines they owned. The answers were wonderfully varied, ranging from one to eight machines. One member owned eight, two had six, six had five, six had four, and three each owned three, two, and one machine.

Today we were introduced two new challenges. The first is an upcycling project with a reveal planned for April. Members are encouraged to repurpose old clothing, linens, or other textiles into something new. The second challenge is a yearlong project called the Improv Medallion Quilt. The medallion or centerpiece can be anything you choose, including an orphan block, and members are invited to bring their medallion to the February meeting. Pat and Roxanne will be encouraging everyone to step outside their comfort zone by offering optional improv techniques each month so that your centerpiece can grow into a unique creation by the end of the year.

Registration has begun for the March retreat, which will take place on March 21 and 22. Participants may register for both days for $120, or choose either Saturday for $70 or Sunday for $50. Space is limited to 20 people each day, so early sign-up is encouraged. During the meeting, Dyanne presented a trunk show and later this year she will be teaching a class on creating landscape quilts using raw edge applique. If you think you may be interested, begin looking for a photo you might want to work from, and further details will be shared soon.

For the February meeting, please bring your colour wheel projects. You are also welcome to bring a door prize if you wish to participate. Door prizes should be wrapped, valued at no more than 15 dollars, and something you would love to receive yourself, such as quilting items, plants, books, or chocolates.

We were treated to many beautiful projects during show and tell, and the creativity and variety were inspiring as always. Looking ahead, the dates for 2026 have already been reserved. They are February 22, March 21 and 22 for the retreat, April 26, May 24, June 16, July 21, August 18, September 27, October 25, November 22, and December 13.
