February 25, 2024 Meeting Review

The Saskatoon MQG gathered on February 25 for a productive sew day at Home Inn & Suites in Stonebridge. Our education topic was rulers and this was run as a group share. Here are some of the basics to specialty rulers we brought or talked about: Twister, Split Recs, Triangle Square Up Ruler, Hex N More, 2.5”x8”, Blocloc 0.5” Square Triange, Blocloc Flying Geese, Wing Clipper, 6.5” square, Free Motion Quilting Rulers, Stripology Ruler, 8.5”x4.5”, 24”x6”, Companion Angle, Quick Curve Ruler, 12.5”x12.5”, Split Seconds, Tumbler Block, Clammy 12”, and Easy Angle. Interesting conversations emerged around whether it is cheating or necessary to have so many rulers when a piece of cardboard or freezer paper work just fine for a template. Also, suggestions included Grippy spray for the back, or slip and grip types of stick ons.

Next month we will have our retreat on March 23 and 24. Send Margaret the form and money if interested. Final day for membership registration is February 29, 2024. If you delay, your spot might be given away as we can only accept up to 35 members due to space restrictions. We are running our word challenge until the reveal in November, and today the ugly fabric challenge kicked off. Don’t forget to save a box top if you would like to participate in the colour challenge that will start in April. As usual, there was so much eye candy.

For April, our education topic will be bindings. If you have any quilts with unique bindings to share, please bring those!

February 2024 Meeting

The next meeting is February 25, 2024.

Our February event includes both a Sew Day and Regular Meeting at Home Inn and Suites (253 Willis Crescent). Come and Go from 9 am to 8 pm (free for members) with a Lunch Break at 12 pm and Meeting from 2 to 4 pm.

Please RSVP for the sew day via smbirnie@gmail.com. Members that are only able to attend the meeting should arrive by 2 p.m. Try to remember to bring your name tags! We encourage our members to wear their own stitched name tags.

We are kickstarting the Ugly Fabric Challenge. If interested, bring a fat quarter of your ugly fabric in a plastic Ziploc baggie with your name written on the front of it to the February meeting. You will go home with someone else’s ugly fabric and the challenge is to create something for them using that fabric and fabrics of your own. You will give your creation to them at the April meeting. The Scrappy Word Challenge has also started. For this, you have until November to say something with a quilted project … a word for this year, a phrase of a song, a line of a poem, a quote, a name, etc.

Note below that everyone is invited to participate in the Education topic this month.

Meeting Agenda

  • Icebreaker – What is something on your quilting bucket list?
  • Education – Rulers. Members will participate in a show & tell session featuring their favourite ruler(s), perhaps ones they have never used, and possibly ones they didn’t enjoy. Let’s learn from each other’s experiences.
  • Show & Tell and Book, Blog, or Bolt – Show us what you’ve made and your works in progress. We all want to know what new and interesting things YOU know about. If you have thought about the scrappy word challenge, please share your progress to get others excited to participate.
  • Membership Renewals by Feb. 29, and Accepting Registration for March Retreat. Please email if you aren’t renewing as we have someone on our wait list
